Bucharest has precious few, outdoor, calm retreats from the frantic drivers and crowded sidewalks. Here’s one, with atmosphere to boot.

This definitely isn’t the Bucharest I remember! So calm and quiet….
A friend brought us to the same place last week and I had the same shocked sensation: birds songs, no traffic noise – all right in the city center. We sat a half hour at the table in the courtyard until the nuns came out for the evening service. I lived 8 months in that city and must have walked past it dozens of times without noticing.
Great piece, but isn’t Carul cu Bere (the famous beer hall) just down the street? How did you manage to pass that place up after your quiet hiatus? As for the hard times you encountered this past summer, well, the economic downturn has hit Romania pretty hard, especially for pensioners. My in-laws face just such trying times. It’s no excuse for going after gentle American travel pros, but Romania’s always been a challenging (but rewarding)gig.
Did you get to our favorite place, Constanta, in 2010? Drum bun!
