Whew. I'm glad this "contest" is almost done with. I am almost out of clever things to say, just to get something mailed to me with your signature, before you become a famous TV travel-food-drink personality. (Yes, I know I was out of clever things a long time ago.)

One of my favorite restaurant memories in Italy was not of a particular place, but the setting. It was dark and we were hungry, looking for someplace along the narrow streets in one of the beautiful walled towns. Looking down--as in downhill--we saw a little place with wooden table and benches sitting out in the dimly lit street.

The tables and benches had wooden blocks below the downhill legs to level the tops. We sat there enjoying drinking Italian red wine out of water glasses and eating some of the best pasta dishes ever. But, maybe it was the setting.

I agree with you onhe best gelateria - I once had formaggio e pera (cheese and pear) gelato there, that I can still remember the taste of. Not much better in life than to get some gelato and sit in the Piazza next to the cisterna.

One of the best meals we've had (and there are SO many places to choose from!) was at Il Vecchio Mulino, in Saline di Volterra. The wine presentation was the most fascinating I've ever seen - complete with 'warming' the glasses with a bit of wine prior to pouring. I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

I'm *so* going to eat at Cantina Senese when I'm in Livorno next month...

With you, too, on Gelateria di Piazza (with an honourable mention for Kopa Kabana in Siena).

Libertaria is another of my favourites. I was sent there by someone on the island, was sceptical like you, but amazed by the quality of the seafood. Funny, I don't think I'd ever seen it in a guidebook, food guide or anywhere.
