There were two problems I had when eating in Italy.

First, I could never figure out the “firsty,” “secondie” and “thirdee” course system. I mean, could I start with the second and go back to the first? Could I skip the second and just do the first and then go to the third?

Second, at my age, those people ate dinner so damn late that it was almost time for my breakfast.

@Nomadic Chick – I know! All of my many, many food pictures are of, well, *pretty* food and the food served at the cheap places, while delicious, isn’t usually much to look at.

@Lex – I know, every time I have to write or edit anything about Tuscan food the cravings become unbearable.

@Robbin – You almost certainly did. They’re almost directly across the road from each other.

@Oana – Food is about the only thing great about Livorno. There’s several other above average places I haven’t mentioned here. Everything else, accommodations, attractions, attractiveness, parking are pretty lame.

@Mindy – They struck me right away as being extra serious about their food. I caught them just after they returned from a food trip. You should have seen all the boxes piled that they’d purchased on their trip. I can’t wait to go back.

I ate at Trattoria da Leo three (or maybe even four) times while spending a week in Lucca last summer. A great find. Fabulous food and wonderful service. I ate inside where most of the locals dine.

A Gambe di Gatto was one of the best dining experiences I’ve EVER had. Laura and Emanuele are so passionate about their food and wine. It was a magical meal and one I will remember fondly. I hope to return one day!!
