This is brilliant information. Thank you for sharing. I have never been arrested or detained while abroad and don't plan on that ever happening to me, but I will now know what to do if it does happen. Thanx again!

I love this post! Very informative. It's very important for travelers to know this kind of information. The moral lesson here is never, never, never commit on illegal activities - in your homeland or abroad.

We travelled to the Xingjiang Province, China in September and it took us less than an hour before we were at the local police station. Due to the riots held earlier this year, the local police are a wee bit nervous of foreigners with big cameras, and thought perhaps we were photo journalists.

They were quite nice about it, even asking if they could delete photos deemed sensitive. We had taken photos of tanks and police in riot gear as well as the local market and local people. After three hours we were released promising not to take any picture while in Urumqi.

Apparently earlier in the day, more protests had occurred, and we had read that three journalists from Hong Kong were also taken into custody the and were beaten.

We have travelled most of the world, and this has never happened, so to your point it can happen to anyone at anytime even if your intentions are innocent.

How come you never wear your stormtrooper outfit anymore? It looks so good in that picture. Is it to warm to wear until the winter?
