Hi--

I'm your twitter requestee (jenandtheart) and thanks for answering my question. Of all the 'How I Became a Writer' micromemoirs, this was by far the most pragmatic, and therefore useful-cum-inspiring read thus far. Everyday I wake up, I worry about and loathe the day when am I going to be stuck in Mexico, working behind the bar and under the table at a tourist restaurant just to keep traveling. So I am following your route and trying my hand at being prolific and consistent. As you clearly know, to keep pushing it out until hopefully that lucky break comes along.

I suppose I'll @reply you on twitter just to say thanks for the blog post, in case you aren't receiving blog comments regularly. Would you mind following me on twitter so I can send you direct messages and keep up with your travels?

Thanks again (& good luck in Tuscany).

Yours,
Jennifer.

Well done! Right now I'm in the "mired in the corporate hell in my early twenties" stage. I view it as a right of passage.

You see, without the corporate gig, you'd never have had the money to survive long enough to break into travel writing. My version is writing novels and the odd ad on my own small farm w/ yurt (sans mortgauge.) It'll take around 3 years. Much better than 40 for a house in the burbs.

In this day and age, strange as it sounds, you have to work hard to be a slacker!

Sorry, I missed if you were gone. I just spent the last month cruising the Mexican Riviera on a 42' sailboat with a naked crewmate (unfortunately, it's not what you think).

I managed only a few posts during that time. What we lacked in wifi in the open ocean we made up with dolphins swimming alongside the boat in the dark of night lit up with bioluminescence. Very trippy.

Hi Leif, greetings from Hong Kong! I've been following your blog for over a year but this is the first time I leave a message. I first found your travelogue on Mt. Kinabalu, when researching info for my mountain-climbing trip. I nearly laughed my head off the first time I read it. After the climb, I re-read your travelogue and found I could identify with 80% of your experience. I've read all your travelogues since, some articles are really much funnier than Bill Bryson's travelogues on European tours. Now I must say I really admire your courage for starting from scratch a new career path. I once consider some similar thoughts but just couldn't gather enough courage. I wish you best of luck with your future endeavour and I'd really love to buy your biography when it came out one day, which I'm sure it would.

Yay! You're back! I'll take previously written, unpublished origin stories over dead air any day. Is it just me or does this story feel like the beginning of a super-hero tale. "I was just an average joe, until one day I realized I had the amazing ability to travel the world, tell people about it, and still remain fairly drunk throughout." Ok maybe not Marvel material, but who the hell wants to read about someone who wear's tights anyway?
