A.Z. – Yes, I totally forgot to rant about that pre-existing condition BS. Did you see the part where that lady was denied coverage for cancer treatment or something due to a yeast infection she'd had like 10 years earlier? How dare she!!

Gemma – No Italian woman will have me because I like to wear shorts sometimes: http://killingbatteries.com/2007/04/guys-want-to-know-instantaneous-ostracism-wear-shorts-in-italy/

Elfin – I watched "Sicko" while in America because I'm a glutton for punishment, which is why my looks have gone downhill so quickly.

Katie – Lucky for me I'm always a little pissed off or I'd have no career.

obviously the car rental agency cheated you, which is not an unheard of thing all over the world, except maybe Canada, where they are so good, they make me sick, and I am not sure there is not something behind all that show of goodness. After all, blood doesn't lie and they are mainly anglosaxons like most americans (except you, my proud viking). Even so, I must reproach you for having being so naive to think that you could drive through the centre of Florence, with its extra narrow streets. Sure, some get permission; but are you the son or the nephew of a member of parliament or a dear friend of Berlusconi?
As for italian bureaucracy you are quite right. One time I rode a bus without a ticket, they fined me,but I refused to pay immediately, but availed myself of the faculty of appearing in front of a judge to contest the fine. That was almost ten years ago and nobody bothered me anymore.
As for health care in the U.S., everybody knows about it. Italy might be remiss in some things, but when it comes to health care, they are way above many richer countries. I spent 12 days in a hospital, in the department of cardiovascular diseases, and they ran so many tests on me, things that would cost thousands of dollars in your country, completely for free. They operated on a 84 year old woman, changed two valves of her heart, completely for free. Marry an italian girl and you can have all the diseases your body can stand and you will be cured for free.
If you marry the relative of a member of parliament or a very rich person and you can even drive though the historical centre of italian towns without getting a ticket
